The Pathology Portal – Celebrating 3 years of pathology education

Created in partnership with the NHS England Technology Enhanced Learning team, the Pathology Portal has grown into a vital, free educational platform for the global pathology community. It continues to provide high-quality learning materials, foster collaboration, and support ongoing professional development.

Here are some highlights and achievements from the past 3 years:

• Expanding content – The Pathology Portal now hosts over 6,700 resources! This includes a wide range of lectures, case studies, assessments, podcasts and more, covering all areas of pathology.
• Exclusive content – The Portal features expert created content not available elsewhere, bringing fresh and in-depth knowledge to support specialist learning. For example, the haematology editors hosted a successful series of training sessions on the Pathology Portal utilising the whole slide imaging functionality, these sessions were recorded and are available to watch back.
• Widespread use – The resources which span 17 specialties have now been launched more than 350,000 times by users around the world! Check out some of our most popular resources below:

• A growing and active community – The Pathology Portal now supports over 6,000 active users and hundreds of contributors. This vibrant community plays a key role in shaping the direction and success of the platform. The Pathology Portal engaged with lots of the different committee groups at the College including the Trainees' Advisory Committee (TAC), various Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs) and College Specialty Training Committees (CSTCs) in order to promote the availability of resources, receive feedback and seek support for the creation of resources in areas where support was required. The Pathology Portal was also present at several external meetings and conferences over the last year including the 2025 British Society of Haematology meeting, the Fertility Conference and the International Federations of Fertility Societies World Congress.  
• Recognised excellence – The Pathology Portal has continued to receive recognition, winning awards for Outstanding Innovation at the 2023 Healthcare Honours, a high commendation at the Health Service Journal Digital Awards in 2024, and our editorial team from the transfusion specialty collected the Margaret Kenwright award at the British Blood Transfusion Society 2024 conference for work they produced on the Portal.

One of the Portal’s standout features continues to be the use of high-resolution whole slide imaging, which supports not only training and revision but also a growing number of External Quality Assessment (EQA) schemes which the Portal now hosts. Over the past year, user experience has been further enhanced with improved navigation, and new question formats to better support knowledge testing.

As the Pathology Portal celebrates this three-year milestone, the team is excited about what’s to come. Our fantastic team of editors are actively developing new content and working on introducing structured learning pathways. The Pathology Portal team in conjunction with NHS England Technology Enhanced Learning team, are working on introducing innovative tools to further enrich the learning experience, along with personalised content recommendations and more.
